Reflection: His Love.
“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us” (1 John 3:1)
Hey everyone! It’s your girl Julie, and we’re back with another segment of “Salty & Lit.” In today’s post, we’re going to be talking about love. Let’s pray.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your love. Thank You that Your love is true. Help us to understand the depths and heights of Your love. Thank You Abba. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us that we should be called the children of God!” Those are the words that ring through my ears as I recall young Julie in Vacation Bible School (VBS). We had learned it in song form, and while I was younger while I learned it, the Lord has been taking me on a journey to understand it.
For the longest time, I knew God loved me (head knowledge), but I struggled with transferring into heart knowledge (a deep knowing that He truly loved me). Yes, I would be in church declaring God’s love for me, but at home, I sometimes struggled believing God loved me. I thought He was harsh, often thinking that He was demanding me to work hard all the time. While His Word talked about rest, I wondered where rest would be if I was to be working all the time.
“Come to Me all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest” is what the Bible said in Matthew 11:28, but I found myself questioning God about the rest that I would be receiving.
Yet God was showing me I had miscontrued view of Him. I didn’t see Him as Father. I saw Him as Lord, but a Lord to be afraid of (not a loving Father who needs to discipline His children at times).
When I looked at God wrongly, it affected how I viewed myself. It impacted how I cared about myself, yet God in His infinite love reminds me that He has loved me with an everlasting love, and He will do whatever He can to make sure that I view Him rightly.
It’s a job that needs my actions too. I can’t just believe everything about God. I have to believe what He says about Himself and believe His Word alone.
So while I’m coming to learn who God is, I’m also learning who I am too.
