Complacent

“If any man comes after Me, let him deny himself, pick up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23)

Hey everyone! It’s your girl Julie, back with another segment of “Salty & Lit,” and in today’s post, we’re going to be talking about complacency. Let’s pray.

Dear Heavenly Father, You teach us to deny ourselves. Help us to deny ourselves daily and wholeheartedly follow You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Merriam-Webster (2026) defines denial as the “refusal to satisfy a request or desire.” Basically, it means to say no to something. In our Christian walk, we are called to deny ourselves, not in a self-hatred/asceticism way, but moreso to satisfy God more than anything else. In this world, we have so many things vying for our attention, but the thing I want to talk about is comfort.

Comfort often keeps us from retrieving what God really wants for us because we decided to stay in a position that’s comfortable to us. We often stay in comfort because it’s familiar. When we give into comfort, however, we give God’s best a seat at the backburner because sometimes, comfort doesn’t always equal God.

In my own life, God has been calling me write daily, and it’s not always easy. There are days in which I don’t want to write (I don’t feel like writing), yet God shows me He doesn’t want my comfort to be a hindrance for me, so I’m learning to move based on what He said. What about you? Are there any tasks that the Lord has asked you to do, even though you want to stay in your comfort zone? If I had chosen to stay in my comfort zone, I wouldn’t have known how to rely on God’s strength the way I do now.
