She’s Lit

Don’t you know you are light?

My darling, who told you that you weren't lit?

Hey friend! It’s your girl, Julie, and we’re back with another segment with Salty and Lit. I say, we’re, because I’m working with God. Today, we will be teaching you all about identity. As of late, God has been going on a journey about identity. He’s been teaching me that when we don’t know our identity, we act weird. You see, identity is a critical part of our lives. Identity is a space when we know who we are. In “Salty and Lit’s” case, we can know ourselves because we know our Creator, God, whom our identity is rooted in: we are who God says we are. That’s why this journey I’m taking you on is called, “She’s Lit,” where we’ll talk about different characteristics of our God-given identity and as usual, we’ll talk about living it out.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of writing. Thank You for being a Friend and being the ultimate Friend. Thank You that we’re not alone, and that You’re with us at all times. Help us to be near. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

In Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, identity is defined as a characteristic defining a person. That means, there are certain qualities of that person that helps us know who they are and about them. In life, there are many things trying to define us: achievements, people, friends, family, and so many more. However, our identity for those who are Christian is rooted in Christ. It says in Colossians 2:7 that we need to be “rooted and built up in him [Christ].” That means, our identity needs to be secured in Him. I recently did a series called, “Planted,” where I talked about being rooted in Christ, so go check it out. 🙂

But back to my point, our identity is to be rooted in Christ. That means, what He says, goes. Not like a dictatorship, but more so of a “If my identity is rooted in you, that means that who You say I am is the truth, and to believe something otherwise is FALSE.” So my question to you is what identity have you been taking on? For me, it’s perfection. I’ve been dealing with the fact that I feel I have to be perfect, but that’s not true. God called me to be a light, yes - to be an example, but never did He say I had to be perfect, where I couldn’t make mistakes. In Scripture (God’s Word), there are so many people who made mistakes, yet God used them anyway. And God’s been showing me that I’m a light. My goal in life should be to direct people to the Father. “In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and glorify Your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:17). Our identity is light. We reflect the Creator through our lives, and I wonder, how often do we take on the identity God has given us? Are you hiding your light, afraid of how you’ll be to others? Trust me, I’ve experienced that, but something I learned about light is that it can’t be hidden. You can try to hide your light, but in the end, you’ll get exposed some way or another.

With that, how are you taking on your identity? What’s something that you are believing about yourself? What is God saying to you about your identity?

For one, I want to let you know that you are light, a city on a hill that cannot be hidden. In Matthew 5:16, that’s where it says it. You can’t know what God says about you without going into His Word, so I encourage you to go in the word and see what He says about you, but also, “She’s Lit” will talk about it too, but it’s not the same as going to the Word to see what He says about you to you. So with that, I want to wrap up and remind you of a truth: You are light. That means you are lit. Therefore, shine, and we’ll be talking about how to shine soon. Talk to you all soon!
