BUT HIS DELIGHT.
BUT THEY DELIGHT
“but [they] delight in the law of the Lord [God’s instructions], and on His law he mediates day and night.”
(Psalm 1:2 NIV)
Julie, pa vale manje konsa. Kraze tout nan bouch ou, apre sa ou ka vale’l.
Those were the words my father said to me often when he saw me eating scarfing down food. He said nutrients can be missed if I don’t take the time to chew my food properly, and the same way goes for God’s Word. When we rush reading God’s Word and don’t meditate on God’s Word, then we can miss out some important details that God might have wanted to show.
Hey everyone! It’s your girl Julie, BACK with another segment of “Salty & Lit!” Today, we’ll be talking about what it means to delight in the law of the Lord and what it means to meditate on His Word. As we read, I pray you become more enlightened with God’s Word and you enjoy God’s Word more and more. Before we get started, let’s pray.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for being good. Thank You for being our Father. I pray we gain a desire to read Your Word and apply it. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
I believe God is teaching us to delight in His Word more than anything else this season because in order to survive what’s going on in the world, we need God’s Word to hold us down and keep us firm in this time. When I launched “Planted,” I didn’t realize God was going to need it for multiple times in my life. There were moments in which I struggled with God’s Word, but “Planted” came up, and the thing I’ve come to understand is that it’s a discipline: even if we don’t feel like it, we have to do it.
Even if we don’t feel like reading God’s Word, we have to do it.
The other day, I got sick, and I hate getting sick. I struggled in reading God’s Word during that time, so I found devotionals on the Bible app to read. If you’re curious in knowing, I was reading “Until Unity,” “Letting Love In: How God Crushes Your Inner Critic,” and “Do Not Worry.” I found myself still reading other Scriptures when led by Holy Spirit (whom I love by the way), but I noticed something: I kept reading because it was important for me to read the Bible, it serves as a nutrient for me. That’s when I learned when you delight in something, you’ll find a way to make it work, even when you don’t want to do it. You do it because you enjoy it.
“Delight” means to have satisfaction (fulfillment or contentment) in something. It also means to take pleasure in something, according to Merriam-Webster. When I read God’s Word, I may take great pleasure, knowing that regardless of how I’m feeling, God will meet me and speak to me in His Word. That means, if I take time to read it (that is, God’s Word), I’ll get something out of it, but it is up to me to take time to read it. Even if I don’t feel it at that time, read something with the Scripture.
Here’s the thing sis, God’s Word is not supposed to feel good all the time. I’ll be honest: growing in understanding that God’s Word wasn’t meant to make me feel comfortable was DIFFERENT. In fact, 2 Timothy 3:16 (NLT) says, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” So no matter what I read in God’s Word, I know that it is going to teach me about truth and correct me to go on the path that God has told me to do. So with that, What would it mean for you to delight in the law of the Lord? How does this change your perspective of God’s Word?
When you delight in something, even if you don’t want to do it, you still do it because you enjoy it.
Back to my point in the beginning, when we delight in something, we also don’t rush things. There are times in which I’m eating a good meal, and I get upset because I rushed my meal by scarfing it down. Psalm 1:2b says that person who delights in God’s Word meditates on His Word day and night. I’ll be honest, God has been calling me to meditate, and sometimes, I think “I don’t have time,” but this is an encouragement to do it because we have some amount of time available, and if we don’t, check what we’re spending our time on.
Beloved, when we chew on God’s Word, taking our sweet time reading it, there is revelation (insight) that we can receive and didn’t see before.
But Julie, it takes time!
I know, but oftentimes, good things take time. We go through that time, but the end result can be beneficial to us.
I do want to make a disclaimer that you may not get something fresh each time you read the Word, but you can get at least something, even if you don’t need it yet. That’s the thing about it being God-breathed. It’s a word in season, even if it’s not the season for the word yet.
As salty and lit people, we are to delight in God’s Word. Let’s take time to start delighting in the relationship we have with the Father by spending time with Him and His Word. Before I let you go, let’s pray.
We thank You for being our friend, and we thank You for the gift of writing.
Abba, we thank You for being good. We thank You for the relationship we have in You. As we spend time with You, may we grow in delighting in Your Word day and night, even when we don’t want to or feel like it. Help us to move past our feelings and do what is good, which is obeying You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
With that, I want to end and remind you of these three things: you are loved, salty, and lit! Talk to you soon! 🧡
