In The Beginning.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

(John 1:1)

Yesterday, I was teaching Sunday School to the kids at my church, and the Lord wanted me to talk about John 1:1. I remember feeling nervous about it. God, will the kids understand it? Is it too deep of theology? Is it understandable? But as I tried to change, God’s answer remained the same: John 1:1.

So I taught.

Hey y’all! It’s your girl Julie, back with another segment of “Salty & Lit,” and in today’s post, we’re going to be talking about the beginning. Let’s pray.

God, You are so good. Thank You for being the Word, and in You, there is life. Help us to trust Your character in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

I’m not going to lie that John 1:1 seems very dense for kids, but at the end of the day, we need to be teaching kids theology so they can understand the Word rightly. Using my teacher voice, I explained in the beginning, there was God. I explained the importance of God being there at the beginning and explained the Word (Jesus Christ) to them. While it was hard at first to teach them, because I was relying on my own strength, I noticed that God was teaching me something: Trust.

When teaching, I made a song with the help of the Holy Spirit to help the students memorize it. I helped the kids engage with the Bible, but even more than that, I saw how God partnered with me though I was fearful at first. But even as I write this, it’s not me who did that; it’s God. He was the One who called me to teach John 1:1. He was the One who called me to teach in general, so when I trust Him with what He’s calling me to do, then I have to trust Him with the end result.

What I’m learning is that I need to yield to His process. It can get frustrating and make one believe that the easy way is the way out, but what if God is calling you deeper - to trust Him in the hard? Friend, hard isn’t always easy, but hard can be good for you. It teaches you to grow and rely on God’s strength. Let’s pray.

Father, You are so good. Thank You for being a light. Remove the attention off of me. In Jesus’ Name. Forgive me for any sins I committed against You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
