Discipline.

There will be a time. A time where God calls you higher. To increase Your capacity. To heal you, but it starts with discipline.

Hey y’all! It’s your girl Julie, back with another segment of “Salty & Lit,” a faith-based blog teaching young women and girls what it means to be salty and lit (identity) and how to live that out according to Matthew 5:13-16, which states:

13 “Youare the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.

14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

In today’s post, I’m going to teach about discipline. Let’s pray.

God, You are so good. Thank You for teaching us about discipline. Thank You for teaching us You care. Help us to walk out that discipline. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

What is Discipline?

Discipline, according to the Oxford Learner Dictionary, is “the practice of training people to obey rules and orders and punishing them if they do not.” When we talk about discipline in the Christian life, there are different types of discipline. There is the discipline, in which you’re controlling yourself to (not) do certain things, and there’s discipline, where there is punishment invovlved?

I don’t know if many of you have children, but I’m a teacher, and I have lots of children. Something that I noticed is that discipline makes the kids better, in the sense that if there’s no consequence, they’re not going to act the way they’re supposed to. For example, I had a student who liked to go on other websites while we were supposed to be doing classwork. With multiple warnings, it worked for a moment. However, it got to a point where I had to give a different consequence for her to understand: she couldn’t go on the chromebook. When you discipline people, it’s for their good.

God disciplines us for our good. When He tells us no, and we do it any way, He lets us deal with the consequences (sometimes), so we can know not to do it again. When He tells us no and we decide not to trust Him and go on our way, we’re acting as though God is not God (even though He is). We’re trusting our strength rather than God’s. My friend, when God corrects you, it’s because He loves you. In Hebrews 12:6, the author writes this: For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.” If God didn’t love you, He wouldn’t love you and wouldn’t be a good Father, so He does.

Friend, God loves you so much that He was willing to send Himself to die for you. However, it’s not a license to do whatever you want. Remember, you’re bought with a price now, so what God says goes (not in a dictator type of way, but understanding He has what’s best for you). He lets you still exercise free will, but you will deal with the consequences of your actions, so my recommendation is to trust what God is doing and let Him lead.

Let’s pray:

Father, thank You for being our Friend and teaching us about discipline. Help us to know Your truth and walk it out daily. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

So that’s all I have for today! Don’t forget you are loved, salty, and lit! Talk to you soon! 🧡
